The Dundee studio of American video game company Rockstar Games is currently working on remastered versions of its three classic ‘Grand Theft Auto’ PS2-era titles.

Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are among the titles being remastered, according to the Verge.

The titles are expected to launch in late October or early November on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, Switch, PC, Stadia, and mobile phones.

While rumours of the remastered titles have been circulating for some time, Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive confirmed this month that it intends to release “three unannounced” iterations of classic games alongside current-gen ports of ‘GTAV’, ‘GTA Online’, and ‘Kerbal Space Program’.

Given Take-extensive Two’s game library, these three unannounced remasters could include anything from ‘Bioshock’ to ‘Max Payne’ or ‘Bully’.

According to reports, the three Grand Theft Auto games are being remastered in Unreal Engine, with one source stating that they appear to be heavily modified versions of the existing titles. The gameplay is said to be faithful to the originals, while the user interface is said to retain its classic style.

The games’ release dates have reportedly shifted significantly as a result of the pandemic, but the current plan is for a simultaneous digital release across the majority of platforms this year, followed by PC and mobile in 2022.

According to The Verge, Rockstar Games is also considering remastering the original Red Dead Redemption if the remastered trilogy is successful.

Rockstar’s PS2-era trilogy defined an era of open-world games and was one of the console’s most successful titles. While the three games feature distinct worlds and storylines, they are all connected by a shared universe, with certain characters appearing in all three.

Along with the trilogy, Rockstar released two PSP games set in the same cities (one in Liberty City from GTA III and another in Vice City from GTA IV), which were later ported to traditional consoles.
