Google, has officially unveiled the Pixel 5A 5G, a phone it teased in April to dispel rumours that it had been cancelled.

According to The Verge, it sports a small number of upgrades over its 4A 5G predecessor, including a slightly larger screen, a significantly larger battery, and an IP67 water resistance rating.

Though they are few in number, these are significant improvements to an already excellent midrange phone, and the best part is that the price has been reduced. It will cost USD 449 (approximately Rs 33,000) in the United States, which is USD 50 less than the Pixel 4A 5G’s introductory price. The 5A will be available for purchase in the United States and Japan on August 26.

The Pixel 5A’s screen has been increased slightly to 6.34 inches, up from 6.2 inches on the 4A 5G. Despite rumours of a faster 90Hz display, it’s still a 1080p OLED with a standard 60Hz refresh rate.

Additionally, Google increased the battery capacity to 4,680mAh, up from 3,885mAh, which Google claims will last a full day of typical use or two days when using Extreme Battery Saver mode.

Additionally, the 5A is the first Pixel A-series device to receive an official water resistance rating. The phone’s IP67 rating means it can withstand immersion in up to three feet of water for up to 30 minutes. This is a rare feature in the sub-USD 500 price range, where IP ratings are scarce.

The Pixel 5A will continue to support 5G at sub-6GHz frequencies. Unlike last year, Google will not sell a version of the phone that is compatible with mmWave. That is not a significant loss, as mmWave 5G is extremely fast, but its range is extremely limited and difficult to find.

Unfortunately, as reported by The Verge, the 5A does not support C-band 5G frequencies, which some network operators worldwide will begin using at the end of this year to bolster their struggling 5G networks. Google has stated that it may add the required software support in the future but will not commit to doing so at this time.

Other specifications remain consistent with the previous model. It retains the Snapdragon 765G chipset, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. The main 12.2-megapixel and 16-megapixel ultrawide-angle rear cameras, as well as the front-facing 8-megapixel camera, are identical.

There is a rear fingerprint scanner for biometric unlocking, as well as a headphone jack and an 18W charger included in the box, though Google has stated that this will be the final Pixel phone with one.

The phone will come pre-installed with Android 11 and will be covered by Google’s standard three-year OS platform update and security patch support.
