Apple has introduced a new accessory for the iPhone 12 called the MagSafe Battery Pack, which magnetically attaches to the device’s back and wirelessly charges it. It has unlocked an iPhone 12 feature that was previously unannounced: reverse wireless charging.
According to Mashable India, when the MagSafe Battery Pack is connected to an iPhone and charged via a lightning cable, the iPhone actually powers the battery pack. The same information was reported by the blog MacRumors, but Apple confirmed it in a support document.
“If both your iPhone and MagSafe Battery Pack require charging, you can do so concurrently. Connect your MagSafe Battery Pack to your iPhone and then to a power adapter. Additionally, you can charge both by attaching your MagSafe Battery Pack to your iPhone and connecting your iPhone to a power source. Charge this way if you need to connect your iPhone to another device while it is charging, such as when using wired CarPlay or transferring photos to a Mac “read the document.
According to tech experts, this feature may enable the iPhone 12 to charge other devices as well, such as AirPods. However, it is only compatible with the plugged-in iPhone 12.
However, there has been no official confirmation that this feature will work with any accessory other than the new MagSafe Battery Pack. However, Mashable India reports that this may change in the future.
