On Wednesday at the Tokyo Olympics, Indian wrestlers Ravi Kumar Dahiya and Deepak Punia advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s freestyle 57kg and 86kg categories, respectively.
Ravi defeated Bulgaria’s Georgi Valentinov Vangelov 14-4 using brute strength and agility. Meanwhile, in Mat C action on Wednesday, Deepak Punia defeated China’s Zushen Lin 6-3 in a closely contested match at the Makuhari Messe Hall A.
Deepak, the second seed, got off to a cagey start against the Chinese wrestler in the 86kg section, as expected. The first half saw little action as the Indian took a 1-0 lead. Punia stepped up his game in the second half, scoring five points to Zushen’s three.
Ravi easily defeated Georgi Valentinov in the 56kg category quarter-final clash. The 23-year-old Indian drew first blood by snatching six points from the Bulgarian that remained unanswered.
Coming into the second half, Ravi faced a strong challenge from Valentinov, who took four points, but Ravi gave Georgi no chance and dominated proceedings with some solid attacks. He added another eight points against the Bulgarian in the second period.
Dahiya advanced to the quarter-finals of the men’s freestyle 57kg category earlier in the day after overwhelming Colombia’s Oscar Eduardo Tigreros Urbano. He easily defeated Oscar Eduardo’s challenge with a Technical Superiority score of 13-2. Deepak Punia advanced to the Men’s Freestyle 86kg quarter-finals with a victory over Nigeria’s Ekerekeme Agiomor. Punia defeated Nigerian 12-1 on the basis of Technical Superiority.
