Memphis Depay scored his first goal for Barcelona on Saturday to rescue a 1-1 draw away to Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, while defender Eric Garca received a straight red card in added time for a last-ditch foul.

Athletic defender Iigo Martinez gave the hosts a merited lead in the 50th minute when he headed home a corner following his side’s dominance in the first half and a shot cleared off the line at the opening of the second.

Freiburg moved up to second place in the Bundesliga table following a tenacious 2-1 victory against a Borussia Dortmund team that controlled possession but failed to convert its opportunities on the league’s second weekend of play.

Dortmund were handed a lifeline in the 59th minute when midfielder Yannik Keitel guided a low cross past his own keeper. However, the Freiburg rearguard repelled Erling Haaland and company as they clung to victory.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg climbed to the top of the table with a 2-1 victory over Hertha Berlin, with Lukas Nmecha scoring the game-winning goal in the 88th minute.

Bochum attacker Simon Zoller set up a goal in either half en route to a 2-0 victory over Mainz, and Greuther Fürth rallied from a goal down to earn a point against 10-man Arminia Bielefeld, while Eintracht Frankfurt and Augsburg played out a scoreless stalemate.

Internazionale kicked off their Serie A championship defence with a 4-0 demolition of Genoa in front of their home fans at the San Siro.
