Anthony Hopkins, an Oscar-winning actor, has joined the cast of Florian Zeller’s follow-up to ‘The Father’, ‘The Son’.
Anthony, who won the Academy Award for best actor for his work as the father in Florian Zeller’s ‘The Father,’ has joined Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, and Vanessa Kirby in the all-star cast of ‘The Son,’ according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Zeller stated of Anthony’s casting, “After our experience on The Father, I couldn’t do another picture without him.”
“He was the first to see the script for The Son, as one of its characters was specifically written for him. Having him among us as we tell this new storey has been an honour, a source of tremendous delight, and a source of great emotion “he continued.
Zen McGrath, a newcomer, will also co-star in the film’s titular role.
Regarding Zen’s hiring for the film, which was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics (SPC), Zeller stated that he desired a diverse cast “a new, surprising face for the part. I discovered Zen through a global casting search and was instantly taken aback by his intensity and emotional strength.”
For the uninitiated, London’s production of ‘The Son’ has just concluded.
SPC, who previously collaborated with Zeller on ‘The Father,’ obtained North American rights as well as a slew of overseas territories in Asia and Eastern Europe.
As with ‘The Father,’ Zeller and Christopher Hampton (‘Dangerous Liaisons’) adapted ‘The Son’ from Zeller’s critically successful stage drama.
‘The Son’ centres on Peter (Hugh), whose hectic life with new partner Emma (Kirby) and their infant is thrown into disarray when his ex-wife Kate (Dern) reappears with their teenage son, Nicholas.
The young man is unhappy, distant, and resentful, having skipped months of school. Peter aspires to be a better father, assisting his kid in experiencing those deep and natural moments of family satisfaction. However, the gravity of Nicholas’ situation sends the family on a perilous path.
Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (‘The King’s Speech’) are producing the picture, as are Joanna Laurie of See-Saw Films and Christophe Spadone (‘The Father’). Film4 is co-financing the project. The film’s production is set to begin in the following weeks.
According to Variety, Cross City Films and Embankment are handling international sales for ‘The Son,’ with Cross City Films and CAA Media Finance co-representing US rights.
Zeller is coming off the success of ‘The Father,’ which earned Sir Anthony Hopkins two BAFTAs and two Academy Awards for original screenplay and leading performance. Additionally, ‘The Father’ was nominated for Oscars for best picture, editing, production design, and supporting actor.
