In a world rife with mindless cinema, the heart yearns for something more. Amid the drama and musical fanfare that is intrinsic to Bollywood, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani brings the much-needed wisdom within its glitz. But what makes this movie different from others in the Bollywood circuit? Let’s find out!
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Story: A Love Tale Beyond Stereotypes
Opposites attract, as the old saying goes. That’s how a loud, flamboyant Punjabi boy named Rocky meets a well-educated Bengali television news anchor, Rani. Despite their stark differences, they fall in love.
When their families object to their relationship, they devise a clever plan to try and understand each other’s world better. They agree to live in each other’s homes for three months before taking their relationship any further.
The opening dance number featuring a host of Bollywood stars — Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, and Ananya Pandey, not forgetting the ever-energetic Ranveer Singh, sets the mood for what’s in-store in this family drama.
But the movie is not just about dance numbers and comic elements. It subtly addresses deep-rooted issues like patriarchy, gender bias, misogyny, body shaming, and the cancel culture in our society.
Navigating through hilarious one-liners, song, and dance, the love story of Rocky and Rani evolves. Despite their starkly different personalities, love blossoms.
Ranveer Singh is perfectly cast as Rocky, the loud Punjabi guy whose views on gender equality are clouded by familial and societal conditioning. Alia Bhatt, as Rani, ups her acting ante by playing a fiery and self-assured girl, though a better control of the Bengali accent would’ve added to her character. Jaya Bachchan who plays Dhanlaxmi, delivers a multi-dimensional performance with panache. Similarly, Shabana Azmi, Dharmendra, and other actors leave a solid mark with their performances.
The music from Pritam is striking with bangers such as What Jhumka? and Dhindhora Baja Re. Visually, the movie won’t leave you disappointed. Directed by photography maestro Manush Nandan, the flick is eye-pleasing all throughout.
Despite its predictable climax and simplistic plot, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is an entertaining love story portrayed through flashy, feisty characters. It’s a movie that highlights the winds of change subtly and respects familial bonds above all. It’s a tale that reflects the essence of the phrase, “it’s all about loving your family.”
