Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission on Monday, which will provide each person with a digital health ID.

The Prime Minister unveiled the Mission’s pilot project from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15, 2020, and it is currently being executed in six Union Territories.

The digital health ID supplied by the Mission will also serve as a health account for citizens, containing all of a patient’s medical history and prescriptions from doctors, which can be accessible from anywhere in the country by both the patient and doctors.

The Prime Minister stated at the Mission’s launch that Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission has the potential to transform the country’s health care system. The Mission’s inauguration is part of the government’s seven-year endeavour to deliver holistic health care throughout the country.

Without digital health data, Modi explained, people must carry all their previous medical records with them while visiting hospitals. The absence of such records also results in time being wasted in emergency situations, the prime minister explained, adding that the Mission will primarily benefit the poor and middle class.

The service’s launch will enhance not only the simplicity of doing business, but also the ease of living. A stronger digital infrastructure for the health sector, the prime minister stated, will also result in a rise in tourism.

The prime minister stated that India has 130 million Aadhaar cards, 118 million mobile subscribers, 80 million internet users, and 43 million Jan Dhan bank accounts. He asserted that no other country in the world possesses such a networked infrastructure.

He added that the digital infrastructure is assisting in the efficient and transparent delivery of services ranging from rationing to administration.

The launch of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission across the country coincided with the National Health Authority’s (NHA) third anniversary of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).

Modi outlined the government’s efforts to improve health services, noting that the country is establishing additional AIIMS and reforming the medical school system, which will result in an increase in the number of doctors and staff available to provide health care. In addition to responding to the COVID-19 epidemic, the government is establishing health and critical care infrastructure in all of the country’s districts, the prime minister added.

Additionally, he noted, oxygen plants and health infrastructure for child care are being established in all districts and blocks around the country.
