In a bid to secure votes ahead of the upcoming assembly polls in Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel of the Congress party has made a major announcement.
He has promised to waive the loans of farmers if his party retains power in the state. This move comes as a reminiscent of a similar promise made by the Congress party before the 2018 assembly polls, which played a significant role in their landslide victory and the end of the 15-year rule of the BJP.
The Baghel government claims to have fulfilled the previous promise by waiving agriculture loans worth ₹9,270 crore for over 18 lakh farmers in the state.
With just a fortnight left for the first phase of polling, Baghel urged the people to re-elect the Congress in order to witness the government fulfilling their commitment to the farmers once again.
The Congress’ Promise to Farmers
The Congress party has been making strategic promises to various sections of society in Chhattisgarh, aiming to secure the support of different voter groups.
So far, they have made four key announcements – caste census, procurement of 20 quintals of paddy per acre, houses for 17.5 lakh people, and now a farm loan waiver.
Chief Minister Baghel has also stated that there will be many more guarantees in the future, highlighting the party’s commitment to addressing the needs and concerns of the people.
In a recent interview with news agency PTI, Chief Minister Baghel emphasized the crucial role farmers play in determining the outcome of the assembly elections in Chhattisgarh.
He believes that their support will be instrumental in helping the Congress party achieve its target of winning 75-plus seats in the 90-member House.
Acknowledging the significance of the farming community, the Congress is actively seeking to address their issues and alleviate their financial burden through the proposed loan waiver.
BJP’s Silence on Farmer Welfare
As the Congress makes promises to farmers, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is yet to announce any concrete plans or measures for the welfare of farmers, laborers, women, or youths.
This silence from the BJP on such important issues raises questions about their commitment to the welfare of the people.
The lack of a clear and comprehensive agenda from the opposition party further strengthens the Congress’ position and their appeal to the electorate.
With the announcement of a farm loan waiver, the Congress party in Chhattisgarh is making a strong appeal to the farming community ahead of the assembly polls.
Highlighting their previous track record of fulfilling promises, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel aims to secure the support and trust of the farmers once again.
As the opposition party remains silent on crucial issues, the Congress’ commitment to addressing the needs of various sections of society is becoming increasingly apparent.
As voters head to the polls in November, the decision of whether to re-elect the Congress and witness the promised loan waivers rests in the hands of the people.
