Bridging Borders: India and Canada Come Together at P20 Summit in Delhi

In a bid to strengthen bilateral relations, India and Canada are set to come together at the P20 Summit in Delhi.

The summit, which will be attended by the presiding officers of 25 countries and 10 deputy speakers from G20 member nations, aims to facilitate productive discussions on pressing global issues.

With tensions recently experienced between India and Canada, this event presents an opportunity for dialogue and understanding.

Addressing Concerns: India’s Perspective

India’s Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, has expressed his intention to raise all relevant issues with the Canadian Speaker of the Senate during the upcoming Parliament-20 meeting.

The Indian contingent seeks to address concerns and seek common ground on matters of mutual importance.

It is pertinent to note that India’s relationship with Canada was strained following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement linking Indian agents to the killing of a Khalistani terrorist.

The P20 Summit provides a platform for both nations to engage in discourse and work towards strengthening diplomatic ties.

The P20 Summit is set to witness the participation of distinguished leaders from both India and Canada. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit on October 13.

Representing Canada at the summit will be the Speaker of the Senate, Raymonde Gagne. This gathering of influential leaders showcases the importance both countries attach to fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration.

Embracing the Theme: ‘Parliaments for One Earth, One Family, One Future’

The 9th P20 Summit aims to address pertinent global challenges through four key sessions. These sessions will delve into critical areas such as the transformation in people’s lives through public digital platforms, women-led development, accelerating SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), and sustainable energy transition.

By focusing on these themes, the summit aims to foster conversations that transcend borders, emphasizing the global nature of these challenges and the need for collective action.

In addition to the summit itself, several pre-summit events and engagements have been organized to enhance the overall delegate experience. The “Parliamentary Forum on Lifestyle for Environment” (LiFE) will take place on October 12 at the Yashobhoomi venue.

This forum will provide a unique platform for delegates to discuss environmental sustainability and the role parliamentarians can play in promoting eco-friendly lifestyles.

Furthermore, an exhibition titled ‘Mother of Democracy’ will showcase India’s ancient and participative democratic traditions, highlighting the country’s rich democratic heritage.

A Fusion of Politics and Culture

Amidst the discussions and deliberations, the P20 delegates will also have the opportunity to explore India’s vibrant cultural heritage.

A tour of the new Parliament House is planned, providing delegates with a glimpse of India’s architectural marvels.

Additionally, a cultural evening and dinner hosted by the Speaker will create an atmosphere of camaraderie and foster deeper connections between delegates.

The P20 Summit in Delhi provides an excellent opportunity for India and Canada to bridge their differences and strengthen their bilateral relations.

Through open and constructive dialogue, both nations can work towards building trust and fostering collaboration on issues of common concern.

As the presiding officers of various nations come together, the spirit of unity and shared responsibility will undoubtedly be at the forefront of discussions.

With a focus on sustainable development, digital platforms, and women-led development, this summit holds immense potential to generate tangible outcomes.
