India’s Call for Global Unity: Rejecting Terrorism and Upholding the Rules-Based Order

India, in its address to the United Nations General Assembly, emphasized the importance of rejecting terrorism and extremism while upholding the rules-based order and the principles laid down in the UN Charter.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on the global community to prioritize these values over political convenience.

Rejecting Terrorism and Extremism: A Non-Negotiable Priority

India firmly believes that terrorism and extremism cannot be justified under any circumstances. In his address, Minister Jaishankar emphasized the need for a unified response to terrorism that is not driven by political convenience.

By rejecting the notion of cherry-picking in addressing terrorism, India calls for a collective effort to combat this global menace.

The question arises: How can the international community effectively counter terrorism and extremism?

To address this question, it is essential to acknowledge that terrorism has no boundaries. Nations must come together, setting aside political differences, to deal with the threats posed by terrorist organizations.

Cooperation in intelligence sharing, joint counter-terrorism operations, and strict measures to curb funding for terrorist activities are some of the ways to ensure a robust response to terrorism.

Upholding the Rules-Based Order and UN Charter

Respect for the rules-based order and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter is crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the world.

India urges all nations to abide by the norms of international law, refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of others, and respect territorial integrity.

These principles ensure that nations can resolve disputes through peaceful means, fostering an environment conducive to global cooperation.

Tensions with Pakistan and Canada: India’s Stand

India’s recent tensions with Pakistan and Canada have brought the importance of respecting territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs to the forefront.

Last week, India demanded that Pakistan shut down its “infrastructure of terrorism” and asserted that matters concerning Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are purely internal affairs.

Simultaneously, India has been engaged in a diplomatic row with Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made allegations linking Indian agents to the murder of a Sikh terrorist.

India has categorically denied these allegations, urging Canada to provide evidence to support its claims.

Additionally, India has raised concerns regarding politically condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada.

The Sikh community, which wields significant political influence in Canada, has become a critical factor in the country’s politics.

India’s Push for a Permanent Seat on the UN Security Council

In addition to highlighting the need for global unity against terrorism, Minister Jaishankar also made a strong case for India’s permanent seat on the UN Security Council, the highest decision-making body.

He emphasized India’s role in amplifying the voices of the Global South during the G20 Summit and the inclusion of the African Union in the bloc.

By advocating for a more contemporary Security Council, India seeks to ensure that decisions reflect the evolving global landscape.

Unity and Trust for a Peaceful World

India’s call for global unity in rejecting terrorism, upholding the rules-based order, and respecting territorial integrity resonates with the principles of the UN Charter.

Genuine solidarity among nations is necessary to establish trust and combat the growing threat of terrorism and extremism.

By setting an example through its advocacy for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, India aims to shape the international agenda towards a more inclusive and harmonious world.
