Russia-Ukraine War Update: Ukraine estimates that Russia has lost 18,000 troops in the conflict.

Despite Russia’s portrayal of the withdrawal of forces near Kyiv as a goodwill gesture in the midst of ongoing peace talks, Ukraine and its allies claim Russia was compelled to transfer its focus to east Ukraine after sustaining serious losses near Kyiv.

Ukraine seized sovereignty of the capital, Kyiv, on Saturday, the city encircled by Russian forces since Moscow started a full-scale assault on February 24. Meanwhile, Russian forces are reorganising in preparation for clashes in eastern Ukraine. “The entire Kyiv region has been liberated from the invader,” posted Hanna Malyar, Ukraine’s deputy defence minister, on Facebook.

Meanwhile, in a video message, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned: “All of this land is being mined. Houses, equipment, and even the bodies of dead people are mined.” According to Reuters, almost 1,500 bombs were discovered in one day during a search of the village of Dmytrivka, located west of Kyiv, according to Ukraine’s emergency service.
