Billie Eilish, a Grammy-winning musician, is no stranger to smashing records and making history. The 19-year-old singer was announced as the headliner of next year’s Glastonbury Festival, making her the festival’s youngest solo performer in its 51-year history.
“We are thrilled to announce that @billieeilish will headline the Pyramid Stage on Friday night at Glastonbury 2022, becoming the festival’s youngest ever solo headliner,” the festival stated on Twitter.
“This will be her first headline performance at a UK festival,” the tweet continued.
According to People, she is also the festival’s fifth female headlining act, following Suzanne Vega in 1989, Beyonce in 2011, Florence and the Machine in 2015, and Adele in 2016.
Eilish previously became the youngest artist and the first female musician to sweep all four major Grammy Awards categories, winning best new artist, record of the year, song of the year, and album of the year at the age of 18.
With her composition ‘No Time to Die,’ Eilish became the youngest artist to ever create and perform a theme song for the James Bond franchise. Additionally, she disclosed lately that she used the COVID-19 lockdown to write and record a new album.
The ‘Happier Than Ever’ singer also became the Met Gala’s youngest ever co-chair this year, when Vogue announced her appointment in May, stating that her “willingness to embrace an aesthetic as innovative as her music has catapulted emerging brands into the spotlight and challenged conventional wisdom about how a pop star should dress.”
Eilish released her sophomore album ‘Happier Than Ever’ in July and will embark on a globe tour in February in support of the album. She will perform at Glastonbury Festival on June 24, 2022, as part of her European tour.
Eilish will take the legendary Pyramid Stage on Friday night of the five-day extravaganza, following in the footsteps of Rolling Stone, Jay-Z, Adele, and David Bowie.
Glastonbury Festival 2022 will be the festival’s first in three years, following the cancellation of live events in 2020 and 2021 due to the epidemic.
In June 2021, a virtual event was attempted, with performers live broadcasting their sets from Worthy Farm, however it was plagued by technological issues. The promoters of Glasto had also wanted to stage a one-day mini-concert in September, but this was cancelled in July.
Glastonbury 2022 will take place between June 22 and June 26, 2022.
