Hollywood superstar Scarlett Johansson has spoken out about how her Marvel character, Black Widow, has been treated as nothing more than a “piece of ass” in past films prior to the release of “Black Widow.”
Fox News reports that when filming her first feature film as a solo character, the actress expressed disdain for the hyper sexualization of her character, who’s also known as Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise.
When speaking about it, she said, “You know, in ‘Iron Man 2’ the character is very sexualized. And it was really fun, but it also had a lot of great moments in it.”
addressing the aspect of her character that she mentioned previously, she stated, “Anecdotally, people have mentioned that she is frequently talked about as though she is an inanimate object, such as a piece of ass. And Tony refers to her as something similar at one point in the movie. How does he put it? My desire is to have some.”
While it doesn’t appear as though the actor is particularly enthused with the way Natasha has been portrayed in previous films, she was quick to note the erotic undertones of her character. “For a time, Tony treated her like a piece of meat,” she recalled.
Saying that her character uses her sexuality as both a means to feel and a tactic to manipulate the people around her was her acknowledgment of the role sexuality plays in her storey. “Since the role was first made available to me in 2010, the character has been more empowered because of her fragility,” Johansson said. She called her final sacrifice in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ ‘incredibly powerful.’
Unlike her previous appearances in the Marvel universe, Natasha’s backstory following the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War’ is unlike anything we’ve seen before.
Natasha has changed from the way she appeared in the past “During the time that young girls are now receiving a much more positive message, it has been exciting to have the opportunity to be a part of the shift, but to also be a part of the storey from the other side of it by seeing how much progress has been made. Evolve. I like it quite a bit.”
The storey of “Black Widow”, which was released months after the worldwide spread of the virus, revolves around sisterhood and the complicated feelings that arise from the complicated relationship between Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and her ally, the titular character, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson).
Natasha must deal with her history as a spy, as well as her broken relationships that were caused prior to her becoming an Avenger in the upcoming film. What’s even more intriguing is that the new Marvel supervillain, Taskmaster, will be on the show.”
Cate Shortland is the director and Kevin Feige is the producer. The film will premiere in India on July 9th this year.
