‘Lord of the Rings’ now in anime movie

Lord of the Rings: The new animation project with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’, has teamed up with the studio that made the Oscar-winning ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy and ‘The Hobbit’. Variety reported that the film, based on the manga series “Uchouten Kazoku” written by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, will be directed by anime veteran Kenji Kamiyama, who directed the Netflix original series “Ultraman. Joseph Chou is currently in the production phase for the upcoming project. Helm Hammerhand, who founded the stronghold known as Helm’s Deep during the long, costly war against the dark lord Sauron, features in the standalone feature.

This movie will take place in a film franchise that began with the original “Lord of the Rings” film and extended through the six films directed by director Peter Jackson based on the books of J.R.R. Tolkien. The screenplay for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ won an Oscar for Philippa Boyens.

Amazon’s gargantuan ‘The Lord of the Rings’ series, which is currently being filmed in New Zealand, is not, however, connected to ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.’ That project’s setting is set approximately four millennia before the events of the feature films, during the Second Age of Middle Earth; in contrast, Helm Hammerhand’s reign unfolded approximately 260 years before the ‘LOTR’ movies.

New Line and Warner Animation are moving quickly to meet Amazon’s competing animated series. In addition to the animation and voice casting, Sola Entertainment is already working on the project. Based on recent box studio receipts, it appears that Warner Bros. will have earned over $5.8 billion from the six Middle Earth features by themselves, and they appear unwilling to cede control of Tolkien’s creative territory to Amazon.

Warner Bros. Pictures will be responsible for worldwide distribution.
